Reducing the number of people who travel without a ticket is not only in our interest as the operator, but also in the interest of our fare-paying customers.
Few of us want to pay more for our tickets because some people avoid paying, and the loss of income due to people travelling without tickets reduces the money available to invest in a better rail service.
It’s also an offence under Railway Byelaws to board a train without a ticket if ticket selling facilities are available at the station where you boarded. To avoid a penalty fare always purchase a ticket before boarding any of our services from the ticket office or ticket machine when these facilities are available at the station where you board.
If you are unable to obtain the ticket you require from the ticket machine or wish to pay by cash and the ticket machine only accepts card payments then please obtain a Promise to Pay Notice and board the rear of the train to obtain a ticket from the conductor.
