If you board a train without a valid ticket or Promise to Pay Notice you may have to pay a Penalty Fare. If it is shown that your intention was to avoid your fare, then you are breaking the criminal law and you may be liable for prosecution.
Where ticket barriers at stations prevent customers from exiting the station and you attempt to purchase a ticket at the destination station in order to exit the station, our retail team will refuse to sell you a ticket and pass you on to a member of our Revenue Protection Team. In these circumstances a penalty fare maybe issued.
We will only do this if the station you boarded at had ticket selling facilities available. Customers who boarded at a station without ticket selling facilities, or obtained a Promise to Pay Notice will be permitted to purchase a ticket in order to exit the ticket barriers.
We always recommended boarding our service at the rear in order to obtain a ticket from the conductor if you have not purchased one from our ticket machine or ticket office. Please be aware that the conductor will only be able to retail regular tickets and no on board discounts will be applied where ticket selling facilities are available at the station where you boarded unless you have obtained a Promise to Pay Notice and are paying with cash.
